Giving Hope Through Child Sponsorship

A Mission Trip to Remember!

The boys from "Godi" primary school couldn't wait to get a photo with Evan. He was able to catch their attention!

The boys from Godi primary school couldn’t wait to get a photo with Evan. He was able to catch their attention!

Evan, Trinity, and I (Susie) recently had a wonderful opportunity to visit several HCH schools (Help a Child in Haiti) with Adline, the director. Each day we went up the mountains to visit two schools and to meet the kids and their parents. The trips up the mountains were never easy, and sometimes it took a few hours to get to the destination. There were times when prayer was the only answer to moving forward past the wide crevices, holes, and dips. It was very bumpy and if you didn’t hold on, your head would feel it!

Here is the "Godi" primary school.

Going up the mountains was always an adventure! We decided to take hold of some opportunities we saw. While Adline drove, we gave gospel tracts out the window. She slowed down every time we reached out with our tracts to the passer-byers. Some came by on donkeys or horses, some on motorcycles, and others were walking. We never knew what we would see on their heads! They were always receptive to the tracts. What a joy we felt in our hearts!

We saw many kids walking so we decided to send rocket balloons out the window. That was fun and a sight to see! It brought quite a surprise along with smiles, laughter, and pure joy….over simply balloons. In between gospel tracts and balloons, we laughed, told stories, and practiced Creole. It was an amazing trip!

This young man was so excited with the balloon he caught!

We actually stayed a few days at a guesthouse at one of the schools, Puit Sales. We were thankful for a place of rest after the shaking up and down the mountains every day.

This is the Puit Sales school where the guesthouse is. Every morning the kids line up to salut their flag and have a prayer before school begins.

We had a lovely cook at the guesthouse, Madame Julien, who loved the homemade dress we gave her (made by Martha Lou Marty). She was so excited to try it on! It really looked nice on her.

Auteur, an HCH worker, went with us to every school (pictured below). He sat in the back of the truck and many times told Adline which direction to go. We felt much safer with him with us. He was really fun to joke around with!

We were so glad to have out "back seat driver", Aurtur.

We were so glad to have our “back seat driver,” Auteur, along!

When we arrived at each school, the parents (and sometimes the kids) were waiting inside the church to meet us. Adline explained to us before we arrived at these schools that she wanted me to share the gospel with the parents because many of them are not Christians. She introduced us to each group of parents, usually over 50 people. There was a sea of faces, a different culture than my own, but people who Christ died for. Each time I opened my mouth and trusted in the Holy Spirit to give me the words to speak. I started out by asking them questions on what God’s attributes are? They willingly participated! Adline translated with enthusiasm and I knew that God ordained this.

When the gospel message was given at each school, there were some who shed tears, others had heads bowed in humility, and we remember one lady whose hand covered her mouth the whole time the message was given. We trust that the Lord will give the increase to His Word which is sharper than a two-edged sword that pierces the heart. Only He searches the hearts of men and brings conviction through His Holy Spirit, and draws them to the cross.

Afterward, we handed out pillowcase dresses and girls/ladies underwear. It was quite an experience! – not only to see the girls excited over the dresses and underwear, but the mothers as well.

Adline did a great job distributing the clothes! She picked out and wore a pillowcase dress herself!

Handing out the clothing was very chaotic but Adline was calm and in complete control. In this culture, they don’t form lines! We were a bit overwhelmed but glad that it didn’t faze Adline at all. An overwhelming joy come over us that brought tears to my eyes! The whole picture of reaching out to them spiritually and then meeting their physical needs by giving them dresses/underwear (that so many of you worked so hard in making) was a true joy!  Thank you for your labors of love to these precious souls who truly are in need.

It was a blessing for us to meet these ladies and their children!

We also visited a few houses of parents who have sponsored children. The one house we visited was an unique experience!

This was one of the houses we visited. Can you imagine 14 people living in this house?

Adline wanted to get more information about the sponsored child and her family. We couldn’t get all the way there by car so we walked up a path that led to her house. We sat and visited for awhile and met the sponsored child’s family, including her grandma who lived nearby.

The sponsored child is in the bright red shirt with the rest of her family. Her grandma on the far left. Her 19 year old sister, with her baby, on the far right.

As we sat together, Adline told me that this family really needs to hear the gospel message. The mother lived with her boyfriend and they had 11 children. (At that time, the boyfriend was not there and not all the kids either.) And the second oldest girl, 19 years old, was already pregnant with her first child and she was not married either. (Adline mentioned to us that this happens often with kids that are not sponsored. They get into trouble. But she didn’t see a good example with her mother either.) We prayed for the Holy Spirit to speak through us boldly with love for these souls who desperately needed a Savior. So Adline and I made a team of sharing the gospel message wherever we went.

When we went to one of the schools, Trinity began sharing the gospel with five high school kids and it multiplied to about 30 kids.

Trinity shared the gospel message in Creole at the "Godi" high school.

Trinity sharing the gospel message at the Godi high school. The young man who was answering her questions was straight across from her, standing against the wall.

She had no idea that she would be surrounded by so many her own age but the Lord gave her boldness and the words to speak. She said she had no fear but instead a desire to share with them salvation in their Creole language. It was one of the highlights of the trip for her!

At one of  the schools, they made us lunch. It is always humbling when they want to feed you, knowing that they give what they have from what little they do have. The lunch consists of chicken legs, plantains (almost like a dried potato), white yams with sauce, cabbage slaw and sugary coffee, just how the Haitians like it.

They served a feast! Chicken legs/wings, white yams with sauce, plaintains, and cole slaw salad.

They served a feast for us!

Another school, Boucan Mouran, was at the peak of the mountain. It has a gorgeous view overlooking other mountains and the sea far below. We were so excited because this is where our sponsored child, Mantha, went to school. This was the first time for Evan and Trinity to meet Mantha. She came to us right away when we got out of the car! There was tremendous joy for them to finally see each other in person, not just in pictures. The pictures just don’t compare to really coming face to face with your sponsored student in real life!

Trinity and Mantha have faithfully written to each other for about 5 years. They finally get to meet each other! They were overjoyed! What will it be like to meet our Creator, in whom we talk with every day? What a day that will be!!

Trinity and Mantha have faithfully written to each other for about 5 years. They finally got to meet each other! They were overjoyed! What will it be like to meet our Creator who we talk with every day? What a day that will be!!

Later, we found out that the pastors from Boucan Mouran sent home food with Adline – spicy fresh fish and white yams! It was humbling again to see their generosity! We actually found it hard to eat this tasty fish because there was so many tiny bones throughout it. It takes skill to eat this! We were thankful that none of us choked on the little bones!

Adline dared all of us to eat the fish eyes – and Trinity took the plunge! I couldn’t watch her put it in her mouth! Evan couldn’t take it that his little sister would be braver than him so he was also up for the challenge and ate one too! I didn’t care to meet the challenge!  Evan then said jokingly, “Well, we might as well eat the spine too! (as he held it up in the air).” Adline said, “Oh sure, that is the best part! It is so tasty!” And she took it from him, put it in her mouth and crunched away! We were quite surprised…to say the least! Evan is quite a joker, but even he was taken back a little with that one!

One evening Adline took us to the beach and we stayed until it was dark. While she was driving us back to the guesthouse she saw a crab crossing the road. She slammed on her brakes and got out and picked it up! She said, “These are great to eat! I cannot pass it up!”

Adline was excited about her crab that she picked up!

Adline was so excited about her crab that she picked up!

She drove stick while holding onto the crab! It looked a little difficult to do both – hold onto the crab and drive stick shift! I made it clear that I wouldn’t hold the crab but would help her shift. That crab was kept alive until it made it to Adline’s house for crab soup.

Our trip ended with this beautiful sunset! Our God is an awesome God!!

Sponsor a Haitian School!

Haitian schools bring the community together.

Haitian schools bring the community together. The future of Haiti is about education!

Here is the situation: An estimated 75% of Haitian children will never learn to read or write. Unlike the U.S., the Haitian government historically has not provided education for its citizens and the majority of Haitian families will never have the means to pay tuition. (Recently there have been several tuition-free government schools built, but we understand they are not paying the teachers.) The churches in every community operate their own schools and they hate to turn away the kids who want to come. So what happens? The teachers do not get paid. We find this situation again and again as we visit these schools.

A school sponsorship benefits the entire community! With monthly support the school can pay their teachers. They can also buy textbooks, have holiday parties or work on building projects that have been stalled. When you sponsor a school, you receive photos of the buildings, the teachers, administrator and each class! We send a map with the location clearly marked and a brief description of the area and the unique situation of that school. You will receive three letters each year providing news and updates about the school. Consider doing a sponsorship as a group (Sunday School, Youth group, Bible study group, Clubs) or as a family. The cost? Currently $125 per month. The reward? Priceless!

If you want to make a real impact in Haiti, this is it. And thanks to many who already sponsor schools! For more information, contact us or visit: http://www.acworldrelief.org/request-a-sponsorship/

More remote school visits! When the road stops what do you do? Just start walking! Recently we have hiked along some gorgeous streams and rivers as we made our way to several schools. One hike was on completely flat terrain but involved crossing the river several times, others were not as easy as we hiked up and down mountains in the sun! Sweaty we were! But meeting the kids and the teachers at the schools made every effort worthwhile! We are always refreshed by their thankful attitude and how they stick together to have a school with so little!

Teachers Needed…Can You Help?

Urgent Need: Two School Teachers

We are looking for teachers willing to serve in our school in Haiti, starting with the 2015-16 school year. We have seen God work miracles in providing for our students’ needs over this past year and are trusting He will provide for our upcoming school year. The specific needs for the 2015-16 school year include an early elementary teacher and a 7th grade teacher.

This is a great opportunity to serve missionary families while experiencing a new culture!

Do you know someone who might be interested? Please help us spread the word by posting this need in front of your contacts. This can be a short-term commitment (1-2 years) or long-term. Contact us for more information!

CLCS is a multi-cultural, inter-agency Christian school using American curriculum located on a mission center near Haiti’s 3rd largest city. Our student body is made up of missionary children from the US and Germany, children of Haitian pastors, and others as space allows.

CLCS exists to help parents in the Les Cayes area of Haiti fulfill their God-given responsibility of educating their children. Our desire is to present our students with an American-based Christian education that will prepare them for higher education or to re-integrate back into their home cultures. Our desire and goal is to teach a Christ-centered, Biblical worldview to the children who attend CLCS.

Blessings

We had a number of recent photos gathered in a file. They didn’t seem to go together at all, but they did have one thing in common…they reminded us of our blessings!

Child Sponsorship Support. Sea containers come down regularly with needed supplies for the various programs we help manage: supplying food to five schools, school and health kits and bible story books to sponsored kids.

Our section of the storage depot is quite full right now! Buckets of food, boxes of school kits, soap and story book

MEBSH convention. Every April we experience the national convention here in Simon. Church members from about 450 MEBSH churches join for services from Wednesday to Sunday. It is interesting, but loud and very crowded for the most part. There are lots of choirs performing during that time and everyone that can’t attend has the same radio station on broadcasting it all day long.

The first morning we volunteered to help serve the food for the MEBSH worker’s meeting. It reminded us of lunches at church conferences in the states, except they were served rice & beans, a piece of beef and a little sauce to put over all of it.

The Simon MEBSH church is the only church that can handle the convention and they are making plans to expand it.

Evangelism training. We have been blessed to have several young Haitian men come weekly for an evangelism class we have been teaching. Two of them are missing in the photo below, and all but one are all able to speak English quite well. We have enjoyed hearing them share the gospel in Creole.

Rain! Last but not least, we have finally been having the blessing of rain return to south Haiti! After an extremely dry year with almost no measurable precipitation, we have been having rain almost every night! It’s a blessing for the land, but a real hardship at the same time for those who have to dry out all their belongings every day.

Pillowcase Dresses a Huge Hit!

Time and talents are poured into making beautiful pillowcase dresses!

Time and talents have been poured into making beautiful pillowcase dresses!

Generous friends from our home church (Smithville, Ohio) and nearby churches got together to make and donate over 100 pillowcase dresses for us to hand out! We have been giving them out as we have the opportunity! When the Uhlers were here recently, they helped distribute some, too! Once we took a whole suitcase to a poor country school and left them for the pastor to distribute. The church pastor will get them to the neediest girls a whole lot easier than it would be for us to figure out.

The Haitians just love your pillowcase dresses! Even adults try them on and the larger ones do fit them! Everyone is so thankful for the beautiful patterns and the knowledge that someone, somewhere has remembered them.

The suitcases have arrived with underwear and shoes too! Recently we have received several boxes of beautiful book bags, baby blankets and women’s dresses made by Sarasota church ladies. These are all blessings to the Haitians! Several of the book bags will go to a summer camp where the children win tokens for verse memorization or keeping their rooms clean, and they can select a book bag as their prize!

We love to see the creativity that you ship our way! Keep them coming. May God be your rewarder as you see some of the photos below.

Visitors!

Adam and Ann Uhler and two of their children, Lane and Elise, came recently to spend a week with us! We spent part of a day in Port-au-Prince while picking them up, several days at the beach, experiencing Haitian church, meeting their sponsored children, one hiking day and also some touring around Cayes to show them the area and where we shop. Adam & Ann also got to participate in one of our Bible studies. Elise even got to go to school with Grace one day!

It was so nice to have time to show them what we experience daily, to see first hand both the challenges and blessings there are serving here in Haiti. Some of our experiences that week are interspersed between the photos to break them up a bit!

We were blessed with the visit of the Uhlers, friends from our home church in Ohio.

We had several new and surprising things happen to us while the Uhlers were here! One afternoon we were hanging out at the beach at Port Salut together. As is typical on a weekday, we had almost the entire beach to ourselves and so all the salespeople had us to themselves, too! There is no snoozing on the beach, at least not very long, with the vendors constantly approaching…

Later when the girls were in the water and we adults were resting in chairs watching them, suddenly we noticed there was a long line of people coming onto the beach a long ways down. They just kept coming and coming, at least a hundred of them! They were dressed in a certain uniform like they belonged to a club or organization. And now they were coming our way! Did they walk behind us and leave us alone like most people would probably do? No. They stopped in front of us and started surrounding us. About a hundred young people staring at us! Some took pictures and even a few video cameras were panning over us! We decided to wave and smile… Now, I know Adam and Ann look like models and they probably thought they were famous or something, but we have never been considered a tourist stop before!

New experiences were everywhere!

New experiences were simply everywhere!

We also had many different visitors at our door during their visit. One of them was a Haitian lady selling peanuts. Ann wanted to try and see if she could hold the basket of peanuts on her head. It is harder to do it than it looks!

It is much harder than they make it look!

Another surprising experience was awaiting us when we hiked to a natural spring. It was truly eye opening to get there by car to the area where we wanted to hike. We hit market day in Ducis, a town we had to drive through, and we couldn’t get through for quite a while! They really didn’t want cars coming through their market! We handed out gospel tracts from our window and they were more receptive to that…

When we arrived at our parking spot, several Haitian guides went along to show us where the trail was and get to the spring. The hiking was spectacular; walking along the river between mountains, interesting smells of burning charcoal, and unique sounds of birds and goats. When we arrived at the spring, the water was different hues of blue and very clear. It was icy cold, but it was refreshing to swim in after our hot, sweaty hike.

On the way back, we asked one of the Haitians if he could show us where to stop and share the gospel and deliver some rice. Eventually they pointed to a house close to the trail. We followed them and suddenly realized that the flag in the middle of the yard represented voodoo! The people of the house welcomed us, but we turned to Adam and Ann and asked them to really pray! We were friendly and proceeded to ask spiritual questions. The old lady said clearly who she served as her master…she admitted her god was Satan and that she was a slave to him. She was a witch doctor and that is how she made her living. We proceeded to share the gospel and God’s Word. Hopefully, seeds were planted and the ground shaken by God’s power to free her from her sin and slavery to Satan. God covered all of us underneath the shadow of His wings, and He protected us from any spiritual darkness. What a God we serve! It is only through Him that we can stand against the spiritual darkness in high places.

Sunrise Service

This morning was the annual sunrise service and breakfast on our rooftop for all the local missionaries and their guests. We organized it with our neighbors the Yordy’s and there was a great turnout! Thankfully it was a clear, beautiful morning following a rather rainy week. Afterwards we shared a huge breakfast and time of fellowship together.

Always Abounding?

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:5

We are thankful to serve a God who is a great rewarder, whose strength is made perfect in our weakness. We see how overwhelming things can look in a hurry here in Haiti, but God teaches us to keep loving and serving one at a time. Maybe abounding isn’t always measured in amounts accomplished, but in our attitude and capacity to love our neighbor as ourselves!

Retreat! Last month we had the opportunity to go to our annual missionary retreat for an extended weekend. It was held at a resort on the coast north of Port-au-Prince. We got to study the book of Colossians, go snorkeling, and enjoy the pool some…and it wasn’t excessively hot. Although “retreating” isn’t a good practice for a Christian, Jesus sometimes urged his disciples to come apart and rest awhile. So we should too!

The missionary retreat is held at Kaliko Bay.

Newborn! This past weekend we had the excitement of holding a new baby again as our cook, Madam Yadley, had her third child! She was only in the hospital a few hours before returning home, and she was up and walking around when we visited the next day! She named her baby girl Bessakina (though all we can usually remember is the Bess part).

Our cook's happy (and growing) family!

A new soul came into the world and into our lives yesterday! Baby Bessakina is the new blessing!

Madam Yadley told me this is my baby too! (Mike says that probably just means I will be paying to raise her.)

Strong trees grow slow! There aren’t too many large trees left in Haiti as much of the country has been deforested. The large Mapu trees that have been left standing are associated with evil spirits. There are several Mapu trees along the road to Bonne Fin that we often admire as we drive by. Standing Grace in front of one gives you an idea how massive it is! It looks like she could crawl right in that hole above her! The saying “strong trees grow slow” makes me think of the way God works character into our lives. He isn’t in a hurry, but He has a plan!

The branches of this massive Mapu tree are thicker than most trees!

Mr. Grant

These orphans enjoy their weekly English class with Grant!

These orphans enjoy their weekly English class with Grant!

Grant is in his second semester at Liberty University Online. He has been enjoying his education classes and praying about his future meanwhile. He has had some unique teaching opportunities come his way recently which we would like to share.

Calls of “Mr. Grant, Mr. Grant!” are heard every Friday at the Cite Lumiere Christian School as Grant is the P.E. teacher for the entire school from 11:00 to 1:00. Even Grace has been advancing her volleyball skills with the help of her brother! The weekly newsletter from her teacher always lists the special classes each week. Notice the last line:

Specials:

Monday: French at 8:45.  Library at 12:15

Tuesday: Reading Buddies- Grace, Ellie, Joanna

Wednesday: none

Thursday: French at 8:45

Friday: PE with Mr. Grant at 11:30-12:10

Grant has been willing to teach English to many individual friends since he moved here, but recently he has been teaching a group of girls at a nearby orphanage every week as well as another group of older boys. He will soon start teaching English to a Haitian girl several times a week who is living nearby with another missionary. She is in the process of being adopted and needs to learn English before moving to the U.S. to join her new family. Many of these teaching situations give him the opportunity to share the gospel or encourage new life in Christ.

Grant really enjoys interacting with kids and always asks to go along on Child Sponsorship school visits when he hears we have another one planned. The last trip involved a 1-1/2 hour climb around two mountains to reach a remote school. Trust me, he was the one leading the way!

Real life teaching experiences are enhancing book (his online classes require books!) learning.

We have been blessed with a Toyota Land Cruiser, ideal for hauling practically everything! Having this has not only been helpful to us, but it quickly has become another incredible opportunity to serve others. We have already used it to haul various things: transporting a friend with a broken leg to the hospital, buckets of food to schools, tables and chairs, and of course, loads of people! We have gotten stuck in the river already (twice!), but being able to engage the 4WD in a pinch is proving to be really handy… 🙂

The biggest blessing was to have Ed Sanders come from Michigan to fabricate the custom cargo rack on top as well as the interior grab bar that extends the whole length of the ceiling.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Psalm 103:2

Most Haitians feed their children once a day. What a blessing to have a part in delivering a child's second meal!

Just having this vehicle is truly an opportunity to serve!
