What Is a Christian Missionary?

Trinity enjoys weekly outings to share the gospel around the city!

Trinity enjoys weekly outings to share the gospel around the city!

What is a Christian missionary?

(We are continually learning this ourselves.)

A Christian missionary is commissioned by the Lord to share the gospel and to make disciples to grow and expand His Kingdom. (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:47-48). A missionary is an ambassador of Christ who proclaims Jesus as Savior and Lord. The root of the words “mission” and “missionary” is the Latin verb mitto or mittere (I send). In the Greek, the verb apostolos means “sent one,” and from it comes the word for “apostle.”

At least thirty-nine times in the Gospel of John, Jesus refers to Himself as “sent” on a mission. What was that mission? “To seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10). This is was not only Jesus’ mission but He made it our mission as well. He not only refers to Himself as “sent,” He refers to every Christian as “sent.” Jesus commands all Christians to the share the gospel – the message of sin and judgment and the message of His death and resurrection that conquered the penalty and power of sin.

“As you sent Me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.”  John 17:18

“And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they preach, except they be sent?”  Romans 10:14-15

These boys came to know their Savior after hearing the great gospel message!

These young men came to know their Savior after hearing the gospel!

"And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder."  Matt. 21:44 Those who fall upon the stone of Jesus Christ are broken. He will not despise a broken and contrite heart. However, when Jesus comes in flaming fire, taking vengeance on those who do not know God (2 Thess. 1:8), His judgment will "grind them to powder."

God will not despise a broken and a contrite heart!

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”  Mark 16:15

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…”  Matthew 28:19

In the original Greek, “go” is poreuomai, and it only means “go”; “all” is hapas, and it actually means “all”; and “every” is pas, and it literally means “every.” So when Jesus commanded us to, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature,” He was actually telling us to be obedient to the original text.

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”  John 14:15

Here is our cook, Madam Yadley, who loves to share the gospel and was right under our nose.

Our cook, Madam Yadley, also loves to share the gospel with us!

“My mother and My brothers are these who hear the Word of God and do it.”  Luke 8:21

“Sharing the gospel is about experiencing God. If you choose to be obedient, He will take you on a journey so exciting that your life will never be the same.” – Bill Fay, Share Jesus Without Fear

Who is a Christian missionary?

Simply, every Christian is a missionary, and is called to share the gospel and make disciples. Technically, a missionary is one who is specifically called by God to a foreign land  by crossing geographical and/or cultural boundaries (Acts 22:21), sent out through the support of the local church, surrendering everything except the gospel for the sake of the gospel, and sometimes in areas where Jesus Christ is entirely unknown (Romans 15:20).

However, all Christians are sent/called to be missionaries of the gospel regardless of where we live, stateside or overseas. We are called to be ambassadors for Christ (II Corinthians 5:20), witnesses for Christ (Luke 24:47-48; Acts 1:8; Acts 26:16-18), faithful sowers of His Word (I Corinthians 3:7,9), servants that speak with boldness (Acts 4:29), watchman for Christ (Ezekiel 33) and soldiers for Christ (II Timothy 2:3).

The Great Commission is not an option to be considered; it is a command to be obeyed. In other words it is not a suggestion, but a commandment given by our Lord. They were the last words He gave to His disciples before He ascended.

“And why call you Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ and do not the things which I say?”  Luke 6:46

Here are missionaries from three different countries reaching out to this lost man!

Fishermen from three different countries are reaching out to this lost man!

“But you shall receive power, after the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”  Acts 1:8

The early church multiplied and made disciples at lightning speed. It wasn’t because they had fancy programs or great productions. It was because every believer operated as a missionary. There was no such thing as a “foreign missionary.” Not only the apostles but every Christian did the work of the Great Commission – and they did so tirelessly. Numerous passages indicate that every Christian was expected to evangelize, follow up, nurture, and teach the Word. This happened by one person bringing the gospel to another.

Juslienne, another cooks of ours, sharing the gospel one on one.

Juslenne, another cook of ours, is now sharing the gospel one-on-one too!

“And grant unto they servants, that with all boldness they may speak the Word of God.”  Acts 4:29

“Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”  Romans 10:17

Throughout Scripture Christ’s followers are called sojourners, pilgrims and strangers in a strange land. We do not belong and have been sent out only to spread God’s glory throughout the earth through missions. We are His representatives on this earth. Everyone who follows Jesus as Lord is commanded to go and preach the gospel to every creature and make disciples of Jesus. Even with our imperfections God delights in using us to obtain glory via missions. Missions does not only occur on foreign soil. You do not need a passport to be considered a missionary. What we need is obedience. Obedience honors God!

As followers of Christ, we are missionaries in our own home, in our town, in our schools, at our jobs, across the street and around the world. Teachers, employees, taxi drivers, waiters, and waitresses, managers, CEO’s, police officers, fireman, doctors, nurses, stay-at-home mom’s, senators, congressman, etc., are all called to be missionaries and labor for the Kingdom. You are placed where you are with the gifts that you have to reach out to the lost around you!

David Sills says in his book, The Missionary Call, “If someone does not have a missions heart at home, nothing magical happens when they buckle the seat belt on the airplane.” Some of us are specifically called to go far away to a foreign land but many are called to stay local. We are all called to participate in the Great Commission!

“I have set you a watchman…, you shalt hear the Word of My mouth, and warn them from Me.”  Ezekiel 33:7

Let’s follow Jesus faithfully and obediently. Let’s follow Him in our homes, across our streets and to the poorest and most overlooked in our cities, to the most unreached and most difficult places in the uttermost parts of the earth. Think about it: if the redemption accomplished by Jesus is so radically great that its effects are to blow down the barriers to every nation of the world, then we should certainly also cross the street to share the gospel with the family in our neighborhood. All believers must see themselves as missionaries sent by Jesus Christ, sent into the world, and sent on a mission.

“If our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost…”  II Corinthians 4:3

Reaching out on the highway with the gospel!

“Knowing therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.”  II Corinthians 5:11

“Every Christian is a missionary; every non-Christian a mission field.” –Winkie Pratney, New Zealand evangelist/author

Every Christian is called to be obedient to the Great Commission wherever God has placed us. The call to missions has more to do with the condition of our heart than it does with the location of our feet. To ask whether all Christians are called to be missionaries is a bit like asking whether all dogs should have four legs. Remember God is on a mission and we are called to be followers of Him. And it is our privilege to join Him! He has deemed man to be the human instrument of sharing the good news of redemption.

“The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few, therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”  Luke 10:2

“I can tell you that there is no greater joy than leading someone to faith in Jesus Christ. Even if they reject your message, it still feels great to obey Christ. Yet regardless of how we feel, we need to remember this is what He has commanded.”  –Dr. James Kennedy

We do evangelism training

Every few months we hold evangelism training for groups or entire churches.

Every few months we have the opportunity to hold evangelism training for groups or entire churches!

We are thankful for good translators so the training and message is clear!

We are available to teach God's Word when opportunities come open!

We teach God’s Word when opportunities come up!

“…God our Savior; who will have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”  I Timothy 2:3,4

“In flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.”  11 Thessalonians 1:8-9

“It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Hebrews 10:31). This should stir a passion within us to reach the lost. “For our God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:29). God is holy, holy, holy. His holiness is the reason for His being a consuming fire, and it burns up anything unholy. Man has a sinful nature. When sinful men come too close to God, because of His holiness and His just nature He must consume them. Therefore, every human being needs a new nature. Each one must be transformed into a new creature in Christ (II Corinthians 5:17).

A typical baptism scene in Haiti. What is the first thing you notice that is similar to the baptisms you have seen? (Was it the towel?)

A typical baptism scene in Haiti.

“For God made Jesus Christ who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”  II Corinthians 5:21

All the wrath of God was poured out on Jesus, who took our place so we could receive His righteousness. God commands all men everywhere to repent of their sins and put their faith in Jesus Christ. We need not fear the consuming fire of God’s wrath if we are covered by the pure blood of Christ. Who shall escape such a great salvation?

“Let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.”  James 5:20

“Multitudes, multitudes are in the valley of decision.” (Joel 3:14). We need to be like a watchman warning all men of sin and judgment, “pulling them out of the fire” (Jude 23). The act simply requires caring enough to warn of the very real danger of going into eternity without Christ. We need only to tell the truth: there is a hell to shun and a heaven to gain. As Apostle Paul declared in II Corinthians 5:11, “Knowing the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.”

“Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.”  II Timothy 4:2

We should be ready to preach the gospel to everyone we meet, at all times. Let us have surrendered hearts like Isaiah to be doers of His mission – to seek and save the lost…

“Here am I! Send me.”  Isaiah 6:8

Lots of Updates!

Grant’s Garden is Growing!
Grant has gotten himself into quite a project this Spring. He was thinking for a long time how he could help a lot of his friends find work and make money instead of sitting around with nothing to do. He came up with the idea to start a big garden so at the end of the season his friends could split the profits. Of course that depends…if it rains…if there is a crop…if the marauding chickens don’t eat everything off first…if people don’t steal it all… The list of threats could go on and on, but that didn’t stop him from trying.

After getting lots of advice, Grant hired a tractor to till up the ground, installed a fence and a gate to mark the property and then decided to dig a deep hole that serves as a well. Almost every morning we hear Grant get up early and head out with the guys! He has never really gardened before so this has truly been a real learning curve for him. Enjoy the photos!

Prayers answered for Ricardine!
Yes, God is faithful! We rejoice to report that a sponsor for Ricardine’s education has responded to help with that need, and she is now off the street and staying temporarily with some relatives. She met Tim Reinhard last week while he was visiting so she certainly found the right person to really help. She is enjoying weekly Bible studies with Trinity and we continue to work to help her integrate into a local church. Isn’t God good? Thanks for your continued prayers.

Susie has returned!
I returned after spending over six weeks in Ohio caring for my parents and helping them through some medical issues. It was bittersweet as it was hard to leave Evan and my parents but I was excited to go back to my sweetheart, Mike and my other kids: Grant, Trinity, and Grace. We can’t wait for Evan to join us in a few weeks in Haiti so we can be all together again as a family! We are glad things are going a little better for them and we will be returning in a few months to assist them some more.

Susie recently had extended time to assist her parents in Ohio.

It was a blessing and a gift to serve my parents and be their caregiver. So grateful for the memories of the weeks together. God is good!

Special thanks to each of you who came alongside me with your lovingkindness, your encouragement, and all your support while I was in the States. I especially appreciate your many prayers for my parents during this difficult time in their lives, and for the many prayers for my sisters and I. My sister, Monica, and I worked closely together and she was a huge asset to have there!

Thanks to Bonne Fin for planning and hosting our first medical team to Haiti! The team was a trial run for the HarvestCall Medical Committee and a joint effort with Child Sponsorship and Hospital Lumiere. The goal was to interweave loving service with sharing the gospel to the glory of God.

We went out with the team for four days to four sponsored schools in the Bonne Fin area. The schools that were chosen were Polycar, Dubois, Dagout and Marc Eric. It was a blessing to see the spirit of cooperation within the team, and the love extended so warmly to the Haitians. The team gave exams to 110-125 people per day, predominately school students. One day we had to bring a very sick child back to the hospital with us.

We loved having Evan visit over the holidays! We went to his favorite beaches and then took some short trips, too. First we stayed in Bonne Fin at the Plattner’s invitation for a few nights (they were in the States). Then we also stayed in Port Salut at a guest house near the beach. We had extended time to relax and make extra-special memories together!

So we fast forward a few weeks and Evan is back in school already in Ohio and the rest of so soon back in our school and work schedules. The treasure that remains is the time that we had to strengthen our relationships and encourage our faith in God, our eternal treasure.

Grant is a junior in college already and in a hurry to finish! He has been substituting for a few teachers at the local Christian missionary school, as well as continuing to teach P.E. for the entire school on Friday. He keeps busy in the community as he works with area boys and finds all kinds of ways to make a difference in their lives!

Trinity and Grace really enjoy being here too. They have to do normal things like homework, cooking, dishes or piano lessons, but they also enjoy their Haitian and missionary friends! They are both very creative and there is always a project or two going on around the house.

Evan, Grant and Trinity are all doing so well at picking up the Creole language! Trinity looks forward to weekly outings to share the gospel around the city and she has memorized many Creole verses to share with people. Grace is learning French in school but we also hear Creole coming out now and then.

Who Are The Least of These?

A common sight in Haiti. Will this child be able to read and write someday?

A common sight in Haiti. Will this child be able to read and write someday?

We have to be careful who we call “the least of these!” What do we first measure when we meet a person…their earthly wealth or their eternal treasure? Most of the time we are not on the same page with God about who are truly “the least.” God can see the heart of the richest man on earth and might see him as entirely bankrupt. When we meet a homeless person or someone forced to beg, only God knows their faith and their hope for eternity. Paul concludes in the book of Romans that each person is either justified or condemned by their faith before God. James says, “Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?” (James 2:5)

Let’s start with earthly riches. Haiti is indeed the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Globally, Haiti was just ranked 140 out of 142 countries in the 2015 Prosperity Index (The Legatum Prosperity Index™…google it or visit www.prosperity.com) just before Afghanistan and the Central African Republic, losing five places compared to last year…there are basically no jobs and no opportunities for many here. Except for the top few percent, everyone is in survival mode day after day. Push, shove, lie, cheat, steal. And with nothing to do, you usually get into trouble.

…ENTER THE GOSPEL! (eternal riches)

“The entrance of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” Psalm 119:130
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17
When someone comprehends their sin before a holy God and comprehends the wrath of God on them if they die in that state, the spiritual eyes are open. Sharing something as basic as the Ten Commandments brings this light to every man and his conscience bears record that it is true.

What if it was your job to teach 45 1st graders?

2015 in Review. In 2015 our MEBSH Child Care staff worked together for Christ as we served all ages of children and young adults. In the midst of crushing need here, we tried to bring hope and encouragement with a smile and a listening ear, as well as finding opportunities to share the gospel. And we have seen first-hand how a faithful sponsor can provide real hope through monthly support, letters, gifts and personal visits with the students while visiting here in Haiti.

In 2015 we added two new sponsored schools, bringing our number of schools to 120. We are now helping with the sponsorship of a total of 1,079 students from Kindergarten through the 13th year in 15 local MEBSH schools, including students in the trade/technical schools and those at the university level. The school sponsorship program affects over 10,000 Haitians students! (AC World Relief sponsors 710 students and 114 schools through MEBSH Child Care and over 450 students plus one school through Help a Child in Haiti.)

Are you interested in sponsoring a child or an entire school in Haiti? You can help at any level! For more information, visit www.acworldrelief.org/sponsorships/. You can give a child lasting hope through education, hearing the gospel, and the ability to read the Bible for themselves. Your intervention in the life of one child can make a lasting difference and affect generations to come.

“Whatever you do for the least of these my brothers or sisters, you do it for Me.”  Matthew 25:40

Thanks for remembering that providing for “the least of these” is God’s heart!

We want to send our love and greetings to our family and friends far and wide! Thanks for your love and support. We miss all of you, but remain blessed and thankful to be serving here. Evan is here for three weeks, so we are enjoying our time together!

And this month we had our second Haiti anniversary! God has been faithful in providing each and every day for two years. Thanks for your continued prayers and for the many deeds and expressions of support. We couldn’t do this without what you do to back us up.

May God especially bless you and your families this Christmas!
